The subject covers basic immunology including Antigens, Antibodies, Adaptive and Innate Immunity, cells involved in immune reactions. Also covered is the major histocompatibility complex, hypersensitivity reactions, immunity to bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and protozoans.

Students are introduced to biotechnology by learning DNA structure and functions, chromosomal and plasmid DNA; Plasmid isolation and profiling. Genetic probing and preparation of probes; DNA hybridization are covered. The polymerase chain reaction and its applications; random amplified DNA polymorphism PCR and reverse transcriptase PCR are all covered in form of lectures and practicals.

Dr. Peter B. Gathura

Dr. Peter B. Gathura specializes in Zoonoses, immunology, water and environmental Hygiene.  He undertakes research in Veterinary Public Health and has several publications. Currently undertaking research on rabies, African Swine Fever and Rift Valley fever.  He also participates in consultancies on behalf of the department and in private capacity. These include establishment of a water laboratory for UNICEF in Rumbek, South Sudan and a slaughterhouse for AMREF TERANUOVA in Turkana, County.   He is registered by the National Environment Management Agency (NEMA) as a Lead Expert in Environmental Impact Assessment. I am a member of the Kenya Bureau of Standards Committee on drinking Water Standards. He is also registered by the Kenya Veterinary Association as a Veterinary Surgeon and a member of the Kenya Veterinary Association. View Dr. Gathuras Profile.

Prof. Kangethe's research area of specialization is food safety and has worked in the following projects: Environmental and Social Ecology of Human Infectious Diseases, mitigations of aflatoxin contamination of milk value chain by mapping feed flows and associated aflatoxin risks associated with feed, strengthening capacity in hazard identification, risk assessment and communication in the feed –dairy chain, Building capacity to improve the safety of animal source foods and ensure continued market access for poor farmers in sub Saharan Africa, Assessment of health risks associated with untreated wastewater reuse for agriculture, Aflatoxin B1 and M1 in animal feeds and Milk obtained from urban producers in four urban centres in Kenya, Health risks associated with Cryptosporidiosis in urban smallholder dairy production in Dagoretti Kenya, Assessing health risks and benefits associated with urban agriculture, Assessing and managing milk borne health risks for the benefit of consumers in Kenya, Agro-ecosystem health approach to management of farming systems and development, Prevalence and Control of Parasitic Zoonoses related to Meat, Epidemiological investigations of vector borne zoonosis using insect blood meal analysis, Slaughter hygiene and Speciation of Meat Species. Prof. M. M. Kagiko


(University of Nairobi)

Prof. Kagiko is an Associate professor in the  Department of Public Health, Pharmacology and Toxicology and a former dean of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (2001-2005). He graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine  (1975) and Masters in Public Health in (1975) and PhD in 1986 from the University of Nairobi. Between 1985 and 1992, he was head of Public Health  Section. He has 25 publications in refereed journals.

Dr. G. O. Aboge

Dr. Aboge's work involved identification and validation of molecular drug targets of antifolate and 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate (DOXP) based drugs, as well as inhibitors of M17Leucine aminopeptidase and inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase enzymes of Babesia in comparison with Plasmodium species. Mr. Nduhiu Gitahi
