The department of Public Health, Pharmacology and Toxicology (PHPT) has a long history with Meat Training Institute (MTI), in the training of Meat Inspectors for the Kenyan market and beyond. In Septmber, 2012, the department entered into an MOU with MTI to train Meat Inspectors at Diploma level, the institute was  therefore accredited by the University of Nairobi to offer Diploma in Veterinary Public Health and Meat Technology.

Students are therefore registered as University of Nairobi students, have access to university facilities including: library, website among others.

Urban and regional planning, sustainable urban and rural development and global issues such as climate change are also on the agenda. The project ‘Peepoo - a poor-inclusive leapfrog sanitation solution?´ studies study health effect from Peepoo school sanitation and aim to optimize microbial safety of Peepoo reuse chain, when operating at large scale in Kibera, Nairobi urban slum area, Kenya.
