MASTER OF SCIENCE IN NATURAL PRODUCTS AND BIOPROSPECTING

Overview

The course aims at training critical thinkers capable of generating innovative ideas towards development of safe and efficacious drugs from natural products of microbial, marine, animal and plant biodiversity, against important human and animal diseases.

MODE OF DELIVERY

The course shall be offered face-to- face either as full-time or part-time study, or through Open, Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) modes of study.

 Face -to-face mode

Full-time mode

This shall involve the use of tutorials, group-based learning, problem-based learning, practicals offered on fulltime basis. The contents will be delivered from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm during week days

Part-time mode

This shall involve the use of tutorials, group-based learning, problem-based learning, practicals offered on part-time basis. The contents will be delivered from 5.30pm to 9.00 pm during week days and 8.00 am-5.00 pm during weekends

  1. The common regulations for the Masters Degrees in all faculties shall apply:
  2. The regulations for the Degree of Master of Science in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine shall be applicable.
  3. Holders of the following degrees of the University of Nairobi or other university  recognized by University of Nairobi senate
    1. Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine
    2. Bachelor Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
    3. Bachelor Pharmacy
    4. Bachelor Science in Nursing
    5. Bachelor of Dental Surgery
  4. Holders of Bachelor of Science (Biomedical Technology, Zoology, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Animal Science and Agriculture) of the University of Nairobi or other university  recognized by University of Nairobi senate with at least upper second-class honors or lower second class honors with a minimum of two (2) years work experience in a relevant field.
  5. Holders of Master of Science degree in related disciplines.
  6. Holders of a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline from other institutions recognized by the Senate of the University of Nairobi.
  1. Scientists trained at Masters and Doctoral level in Natural products and bioprospecting will be well prepared to serve in pharmaceutical companies; Higher Institutions of learning/Universities; Government institutions, Research institutions, and also in Policy making.
  2. Natural  Products science, scope and relationship with other disciplines; historical trends and advances in Natural Products Local, Regional and Global; types and sources of natural products; Biodiversity; Taxonomy  and ecology of sources of selected NP e.g. plants, fungi, bacteria, animal origin. .
