Abstract

The goal of the project is to provide an information and communications technology framework for improved monitoring and control of antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance in livestock in low- and middle-income countries. The project is focused on the poultry value chain in Kenya and Uganda.

Antimicrobial resistance is a serious threat to global public health and interventions to address it are urgently required. The project applies information and communications technology in poultry production to enhance poultry health, reduce the need to use antibiotics and limit the risk of development and spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Objectives

  • Characterize the use of veterinary drugs in urban and peri-urban poultry production systems.
  • Develop and pilot an information and communications technology framework to monitor antimicrobial use and support delivery of animal health services.
  • Analyze the short-term impact of improved monitoring of antimicrobial use and animal health support.
