Dr. Kiambi Stella Gaichugi
Value chain mapping to assess governance challenges, food safety risks, and Escherichia coli genetic diversity along the dairy food system in Nairobi Kenya
Biography
Stella Kiambi is the National Coordinator for Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) projects at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Her current work is focused at management and implementation of different AMR projects from diverse donors. In addition, Stella is the Deputy Country Team Leader at the Emergency Centre for Transboundary Animals (FAO) where she supports in resource mobilization, designing and implementation of various One Health related projects. Previously, Stella has successfully implemented the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus project that resulted to identification and characterization of the virus for the first time in the country. She is a very strong advocate of One Health as a strategy towards creation of synergy and complementarity in tackling public health threats. Stella has Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine (University of Nairobi), MSc in Applied Epidemiology (JomoKenyatta University of Science and Technology) and a PhD in Veterinary Public Health (University of Nairobi). Stella’s doctorate focused on value chain mapping, assessment of governance challenges and their influence on food safety in rapidly urbanizing city of Nairobi. The study demonstrated the utility of holistic analysis of food systems to inform targeted interventions, particularly for the resource constrained countries like Kenya. Stella’s strength lies in her ability to effectively collaborate and bridging the gap between research and development. She has extensive experience in project management and has mastered excellent communication skills for different audiences including writing of technical reports, peer reviewed publications, policy briefs, conference presentations, communication with the general public among others.
