Research Laboratories- Bacteriology

Bacteriology Laboratory test for aerobic and anaerobic culture of swabs, fluid, food samples and tissue. Identification of the isolated species is carried out as far as possible including biochemical tests and serological tests (antigen antibody reactions). Antimicrobial Sensitivity testing (AST) is performed on pure isolates to determine the best drug of choice for treatment as well as determine development of resistance to specific antibiotics commonly used in treatment of animals.

LAMINAR FLOW CABINET

A laminar flow cabinet or laminar flow hood or clean bench is a carefully enclosed bench designed to prevent contamination of research materials such as biological samples, media or any particle-sensitive device. Unlike the fume chamber, this laminar flow does not protect the user but what you are working on e.g. medium.

ROTA VAPOUR MACHINE

The rota vapour works by increasing the rate of evaporation of the solvent by reducing the pressure to lower the solvent boiling point, rotating the sample to increase the effective surface area and heating the solution. The equipment is used to concentrate the extracted samples such as aflatoxin and plant extract samples for further analysis.

DEEP FREEZERS (-40 Degrees)

Laboratory Deep freezers are important in the laboratory where large samples are handled and need to be frozen before and after analysis. They are crucial in safe storage of reagents, frozen vaccines and other temperature sensitive specimens for research purposes that require freezing temperature up to -20 to -40 degree. These freezers are ideal for routine storage of samples in the clinical, pharmaceutical and molecular Biology laboratories.

Department of PHPT

The department of Public Health Pharmacology and Toxicology (PHPT) is one of the functional units of the University of Nairobi, under the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. At the department of PHPT we have three thematic areas for research and training: Veterinary Public Health, Pharmacology and Toxicology and Leather Science and Technology. The thematic unit of Veterinary Public Health is where we train both undergraduate and postgraduate students on food safety and hygiene, veterinary epidemiology and economics and one health concepts.
