PHILOSOPHY
The Bachelor of Science degree programme in Leather Science and Technology is designed and developed so as to be consistent with the global leather industry and environmental protection. The programme consists of a core, which provides basic skills applied sciences, elements of economics, fundamentals of engineering, instrumentation and control, leather goods and footwear design and manufacture as well as specialized courses in leather science and technology. It also places considerable emphasis on the development of broad professional skills (such as communication skills and Information Systems and Applications). The aim of the curriculum is to impart on the student, comprehensive knowledge and skills in leather manufacturing with some knowledge in basic entrepreneurship and business management.
RATIONALE
The University of Nairobi, being a world class university committed to scholarly excellence has identified the critical role that science and technology plays in our Nation’s development which is in line with vision 2030 and also, the current government’s big four agenda. Advances in Science and Technology have increased demand for qualified or specialized personnel who have a wide and sound knowledge in their areas of specialization with some knowledge of basic business skills. The BSc Leather Science and Technology programme is a specialized course that deals with the processing of hides and skins into leather and the production of various leather products.
Due to the shortage of leather scientists and technologists in Kenya, pure chemists are often employed in the leather industry. Feedback from these industries has shown that these chemists who have no specialization are handicapped in core skills and hence require further training. The BSc Leather Science and Technology will therefore, produce graduates who will help initiate and manage leather factories, offer consultancy and contracting services to the leather industries and raw stock production units, and monitor, on behalf of the public, the responsible operation of the leather industry. The programme will also assist in the creation of small and medium scale leather cottage industries (SMEs) in line with” Vision
2030.”
