Overview
Objectives
The overall goal of this programme is to build capacity and impart skills in veterinarians and other health practitioners to analyze the effectiveness of various animal disease control and prevention strategies that would empower the society.
Philosophy
In the undergraduate curriculum for training Bachelors of Veterinary Medicine, student training is geared towards producing general veterinary practitioners. However, the needs of animal resources sector also require field and administrative personnel specialized in veterinary epidemiology and economics who can contribute be advising relevant government departments and agencies on effective policies for disease control and prevention. This is an objective which is in-line with the country vision 2030, when Kenyan is expected to achieve a middle level income, and therefore self-sufficiency in food production.This is in line with the University of Nairobi’s mission of providing quality education and support for research and community service to the Kenyan people. The course is designed for training experts who will contribute to disease control programmes within the region.
Rationale
This programme will ensure that the department produces graduates who can contribute in national and regional development through effective disease control and prevention through collection, collation and evaluation of data on animal diseases both at County and national levels, advising governments on the present and future disease control policies, evaluation of the effectiveness of animal health and disease control programmes, conducting field based research, and participation in emergency preparedness and response to transboundary animal diseases, pandemics and other One Health Challenges.Need assessment for the review of this curriculum was undertaken and it involved stakeholders from both public and private sectors.

Structure
Normally, the candidates will be required to carry out their thesis research under supervision and subsequently compile a thesis which would be presented for examination in the prescribed manner for Doctoral Thesis in all faculties.
Mode of Delivery
Full Time
This program is by research and thesis and has no course-work component.
The programme is delivered by supervisors through a variety of face-to-face methods such as tutorials, experiential exercises, practical exercises, seminars, individual and/or group assignments and presentations.
Open, Distance Learning, and e-Learning (ODeL)
The ODeL mode of study is offered using multi-media approach, including a variety of self instructional print and electronic study materials. In addition, there is limited face-to-face instructional mode during residential training. ;
Schedules of Intake:
The intakes for both Undergraduates and postgraduates students is scheduled for September every year.
Admission Requirements
Admission into the programme shall be opened to:
- Holders of Master of Science degree in Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics of the University of Nairobi.
- Holders of a Master of Science degree in Veterinary Epidemiology and Economics from other Universities which has been approved by the Senate to be equivalent to the Master of Science in Clinical Studies, University of Nairobi.
- Holders of the Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent who, having been validly registered for Masters degree in the University of Nairobi, have been allowed by Senate to have their Master's degree upgraded to a Doctoral level in the prescribed manner.
- Candidates will be required to draw and submit a detailed Doctoral research proposal in the prescribed manner at the time of applying for admission.
